Easy 4-Step Moisturizing Banana Hair Mask Recipe

Now that summer is coming to an end, many of us are staring into the mirror and realizing that the sun, sand, salt, and chlorine have taken a bigger toll on our tresses than we would like. But before you run off to the salon to try the “chop, and start over” method, we have a much easier, and less expensive suggestion.

Here’s an ultra-nutritious, extra moisturizing banana hair mask you can make at home, in just four easy steps.

Ready?

Step One: Gather and Blend Ingredients

You will need:

  • One very ripe banana (two if your hair is very long)
  • 2 tablespoons of all-natural honey (not the fake corn syrup stuff they sometimes sell at the grocery store)
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil or coconut oil

When blending, make sure you reduce the bananas to a consistent paste. You do not want any chunks left over, as these will most certainly get stuck in your hair. The honey is for extra moisture, but also to help even out the consistency. Once the honey and oil have been added in, you should be left with a mixture that has a similar consistency to regular conditioner.

Step Two: Apply Hair Mask

We cannot stress this enough: do not wear your favorite shirt while applying this hair mask. Wear old clothes, and wrap an old towel around your shoulders before beginning.

Begin at the roots of your hair and work the hair mask through to the tips. You will most likely end up using every last bit of hair mask you made, unless your hair is very short.

This process can be somewhat time-consuming, especially if your hair is very thick, so we recommend having some music, or perhaps a Netflix show queued up so you don’t get bored and rush this part. Really make sure that you have covered every bit of your hair with the mask.

Step Three: Wrap It Up

Once the mask has been thoroughly applied, you need to let it do its thing for about 30 minutes. You can wrap your hair in a plastic shower cap, or even just plastic wrap. But don’t wrap your hair in a towel, as this pulls moisture away from your hair, and that’s exactly the opposite of what we are going for here.

Step Four: Shampoo and Rinse

Tempting as it might be to skip the shampoo and retain a little extra moisture in your hair – don’t. Your hair is currently full of fruit and sugar, and if you plan on leaving the house today, you’re going to attract every insect in a five-block radius.

So, use a moisturizing shampoo, and make sure you thoroughly wash the entire hair mask out. The combination of honey, banana, and oil can be quite tenacious, so don’t be afraid to make this a good, long shower.

Use your best judgment about whether or not you need to apply conditioner (you may not need it!) and then you can go on to style your hair as you normally would.

This mask can be repeated once a week, but we think the results are pretty dramatic after the first application. This is a great, inexpensive, and all-natural way to get some life back into your hair just in time for autumn.
