3 Healthy Desserts to Share with your Valentine

Valentine’s day is just around the corner, and with the typical restaurant meal costing over $100, staying in is the new going out.

But there’s no need to resort to a diet-destroying takeout for that cosy night in. Take a look at these healthy desserts to tantalise your tastebuds without the guilt trip.

Nutty Banana Bites

A simple desert, but not one to be prepared too far in advance (unless you like brown banana that is).

These nutty banana bites are great if you’re not into fancy cooking, or want to get the meal over with quickly so you can move onto a different kind of desert…

Ingredients you’ll need

  • 2 or 3 bananas
  • 100g of chocolate (dark, milk or white – your choice)
  • Your choice of chopped nuts for topping

Preparation

  1. Chop the bananas up into 1 inch pieces and stand on their ends
  2. Melt the chocolate in a bowl using a pan of hot water beneath
  3. Carefully pour the chocolate over each banana piece, and top with nuts

There’s likely to be a bit of chocolate spillage, so we recommend you transfer the pieces onto a clean plate using a cocktail stick. Leave these in to make the pieces easier to eat.

Very Berry Jars

These jars are full of probiotics and antioxidants, and they look fantastic as a special dessert at the dinner table.

We recommend preparing these at least 8 hours before you’re ready to eat them, as you’ll want the oats to soak up some of the moisture from the yogurt for a better taste.

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Plain fat free greek yogurt
  • Rolled oats – a handful per jar
  • Berries of your choice

Preparation

  1. Place the oats in the bottom of the jar
  2. Add a thin layer of berries and top with a layer of yogurt
  3. Repeat until full, and top with a couple of berries
  4. Store in the fridge until ready (minimum 8 hours resting time)

The mixture of flavours in this makes it seem really indulgent, but if you like it a little sweeter, you could try adding some honey into your layers.

Sin-free Strawberry Ice Cream

If eating your dessert off each other is your thing, ice cream could come in handy, but it typically contains around 300 non-diet-friendly calories per portion. We can do better than that!

Take a look at this healthier alternative. It even contains strawberries (a natural aphrodisiac!);

Ingredients you’ll need

  • 1 cup of plain fat free greek yogurt
  • 1lb of strawberries (frozen)
  • ¼ cup of sweetener
  • ½ tsp of vanilla extract

Preparation

There’s just 3 simple steps to follow:

  1. Blend the strawberries in a food processor, until you have just a red paste.
  2. Add the yoghurt, sweetener and vanilla extract and blend until mixed well.
  3. Transfer to an old ice cream tub, pop the lid on and put it in the freezer for at least an hour.

For added romance, it can be a nice touch to garnish this with a strawberry or 2.

Make your night go with a bang

With these recipes, healthy desserts should be a breeze this valentines evening for even the most reluctant of cooks. So keep the music and lights down low, put the kids to bed early and enjoy some well deserved intimate time with your partner!

Happy valentines!
